In recent years, solo hotpot restaurants have begun to bubble up around Singapore, finally granting the shy, single or saliva-conscious diner the space they need to enjoy a steamboat meal all by themselves.

Before you decry this solitary riff on the well-loved convivial hotpot as a symptom of an increasingly self-centred world, just know that this innovation first gained prominence during the days of the pandemic.

Therefore, instead of shared pots, solo hotpot restaurants dole out soup and ingredients in an individual pot right in front of you. There’s no need to reach across the table, settle for a choice of broth that’s not quite to your liking, or contend with your brother-in-law for the last slice of fish.

As an added benefit, you might even get to enjoy the wallet-friendly steamboat buffet options and occasional senior discounts available at this new wave of solo hotpot restaurants, each more eager than the last to snag your dollar.

For a steamboat buffet both value-for-money and delish, Paradise Group’s solo hotpot restaurant Paradise Hotpot is hard to beat.

Its 80-minute Value Set – which entitles you to a single soup base from a selection of 10, along with ingredients like sliced pork belly, chicken thigh, fishballs stuffed with fish roe and pork meatballs – starts at just $23.90 for a weekday lunch, dropping further to $19.90 if you come by at teatime between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Do consider forking out an extra $6 for premium ingredients like fresh sea prawns, sliced snakehead and sliced beef short plate, since you’ll be getting an additional $3 off your bill anyway as a senior (age 60 and up) as long as you dine before 4.30pm.

Though individual hotpots have only recently come into the spotlight, City Hotpot has been quietly simmering away since 2014 in the heart of the Central Business District.

It has since expanded its footprint with outposts in Sengkang Grand Mall, Jurong Point and home delivery services while retaining its core ethos of serving delicious, Singaporean solo hotpots.

With more than 15 soup bases to choose from including laksa, bak kut teh and tom yam, sets at City Hotpot begin at $22.99 for a tray of chicken or pork collar, a choice of staple (rice or noodles), vegetables, one soup base and sauces.

If you’re the kind of diner who loves variety, you can get two types of soup for a steal at just $1 more.

3. Bon Broth

If you’re looking to impress, this is the solo hotpot restaurant to head to. The newly opened Bon Broth — famously headed up by Taiwanese celebrity chef Andre Chiang — offers up an elevated version of the individual hotpot experience.

Trust us – your meal even begins with a broth-tasting experience with a soup “sommelier” guiding you through the restaurant’s eight rotating flavours, which include a signature broth tinged with Sichuan green peppercorn, sukiyaki, laksa and satay, among others.

Next come the ingredients, which include the likes of cod, rock lobster, abalone and marbled beef, grouped into premium set menus costing upwards of $100 per person.

A la carte options are available too, though you’ll most likely fill up on the accompanying fixings like handmade fish dumplings, tofu, shrimp paste and vegetables. There are limited seat for both lunch and dinner, so we’d recommend making reservations.

4. Guo Fu Hotpot: Solo hotpot with a side of free-flow xiao long bao

Though Guo Fu Hotpot is a longstanding steamboat brand that’s been knocking around since 2005, it recognised the growing tide of solo hotpot restaurants and responded with suitably sized individual set meals beginning from $25.90 per head.

Like City Hotpot, every set comes with a tray of meat, your choice of soup to swish it in, a platter of vegetables and a staple. In terms of value, dining at Guo Fu nets you an extra cup of ice-cream for dessert, though it also cost $3 here to get two types of soup.

If you have the time (and stomach space), consider opting for a full-on steamboat buffet (from $33.90 for weekday lunch, $36.90 for dinner; exclusive of soup base and drinks) complete with a smorgasbord of free-flow hotpot ingredients – think beef, tripe, mutton, pork, pork liver and more – and unlimited xiao long bao for a belly buster of a meal.

5. La Jiang Shan Hotpot: Personal hotpot and grill, open till 6am

La Jiang Shan Hotpot turns the solo hotpot restaurant experience up to eleven with the addition of your own personal tableside grill.

In terms of sheer value, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything with better bang for your buck as a 90-minute all-you-can-eat lunch on weekdays goes for just $18.80 (extra $2.80 for soup base; $4.80 for double soup pot).

Shoot for the all-in $28.80 experience at dinnertime or on weekends for an upgraded suite of BBQ and hotpot ingredients including garlic chicken wings, crayfish, lamb slices and more. If that isn’t enough to fill you up, there’ll even be a cooked food section with dumplings and steamed bao along with a do-it-yourself shaved ice dessert station for a sweet finish.

6. Chamoon Hot Pot: China-famous solo hotpot restaurant

Chamoon Hot Pot, a China-famous chain popular for its clear soups, has recently landed in Orchard Road.

The name of the game here is premium dining, as made abundantly clear by the restaurant’s gorgeously decorated dining room – complete with a zen garden walkway hidden under glass – and its selection of upmarket ingredients, sold a la carte.

Expect to spend upwards of $50 per head for Japanese wagyu, Hokkaido pork, tiger prawns and abalone swished in individual soup portions loaded with Chinese herbs and other goodies. Save this restaurant and its beautifully ornate solo hotpots for a special occasion.

At Jianghu Hotpot, you don’t have to jostle at a fridge with other customers for steamboat ingredients – it’ll come to you via a conveyor belt and train system. Sure, that’s not exactly as free-flowing as an open freezer of meats, but you’ll appreciate the chance to focus on what’s most important: working magic at your solo hotpot and matching grill.
