6 Famous Overseas Snacks That You Can Now Get In Singapore Including Chia Te And Warabimochi Kamakura
Many of us are probably familiar with the classic pre-flight ritual of packing – and repacking – our luggage in an effort to cram in packets of overseas snacks from foodie havens like Japan, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
But what if we didn’t have to trouble ourselves with clutching bags of duty-free snacks for a full 13-hour flight back to Singapore?
Thanks to globalisation and the recent entry of many famed overseas snack brands into Singapore this year, getting our favourite nosh from abroad is now easier (and more pain-free) than ever.
Though you will have to fork out a premium for convenience, look at this way – you’re essentially paying for comfort in terms of packing and travelling, as you won’t have to make provisions like arriving at the airport 40 minutes early to queue for food souvenirs. It’s also a great way to save yourself from a potentially awkward situation should you forget to get snacks for a certain relative or neighbour.
Read on for six trendy overseas snacks that are now available right here in Singapore.

1. Japan: Warabimochi Kamakura’s Mochi

Anyone who’s been to Japan would know that the country boasts a truly extensive range of branded snacks. Household names like ROYCE’ Potatochip Chocolate, Shiroi Koibito white chocolate cookies and the famed Tokyo Banana are all already available in Singapore, whether in their own stores or at a Japanese supermarket like Don Don Donki or Meidi-Ya.
But for a newer overseas snack entrant that has recently made waves in Singapore, look to Warabimochi Kamakura, a Japanese import with over 50 outlets in its home country. Its opening here at One Holland Village earlier this year was enough to earn snaking, hour-long queues for its signature mochi.
Think of it as a softer, gummier version of local muah chee, swapping out the glutinous rice flour and crushed peanuts for warabi starch (a type of bracken), kinako (roasted soybean flour) and Okinawan black sugar. Thankfully, queues have abated now that the brand has opened multiple stores around Singapore.

Kee Wah Bakery is an overseas snack stalwart hailing from Yau Ma Tei in Hong Kong. It has grown from a small candy store since starting in 1938 to an international powerhouse with outlets in China, Taiwan, the United States and since a few years back, Singapore.
The brand’s two stores in ION Orchard and Jewel Changi Airport both offer Hong Kong-style pastries and snacks including crispy egg rolls and adorable animal-shaped cookies (pandas are their signature, though koala and penguin designs are also available).

Since you’re visiting ION Orchard, consider hopping down to the Singapore flagship of another Hong Kong snack stalwart, Hang Heung, for some traditional wife cakes to go with.
The old-school flaky pastry filled with winter melon and almond paste – said to be named in tribute to a wife’s sacrificial act of love – and other handcrafted bakes have some serious history behind them, as the original Hang Heung Cake Shop was founded more than a century ago in the 1920s.
Other overseas snacks available at the bakery include flaky Portuguese egg tarts, shortbread, egg rolls and cookies.

For fine British tea, tea ware and cookies, Fortnum & Mason can’t be beat. The British brand has more than three centuries of history to its name, having been established in 1707 by Hugh Mason and William Fortnum.
Outside of its original flagship in Piccadilly Street – where it has remained all this time – and a handful of others in London, there is only one international outlet in Hong Kong’s K11 Atelier mall.
However, we lucky Singaporeans are still able to get our hands on it here thanks to a little help from Singapore Airline’s Krisshop online store. Score for anyone looking for a fortifying afternoon cuppa paired with toffolossus biscuits.

Thanks to the power of social media, a Dubai-made milk chocolate bar stuffed with a creamy, crispy mix of knafeh (shredded phyllo dough) and pistachio spread has gone very viral.
While there are attempts to replicate the overseas snack, a Singapore brand specialising in importing internet-famous treats, The SGFR Store, has brought the original viral treat to the country for a princely sum of – drumroll, please – $59 a bar.
Certainly not for casual snacking, but worth considering perhaps, as a treat for a grandkid who did well for his year-end examinations? Food for thought.

Established in 1975, Chia Te Bakery has long amassed a following among tourists and locals alike for its freshly made pineapple cakes, which feature sweet-sour pineapple jam beneath a buttery, crumbly crust.
Unfortunately, that popularity also means ever-present queues at the brand’s only shop in Taipei’s Songshan District – so why not skip all that waiting and instead get their famed pineapple pastries from online resellers on Shopee or Lazada?
Chia Te’s sweet-savoury green onion nougat crackers are also worth trying for a taste of Taiwan right here in Singapore.
