Here are some day trips with a difference, that don’t require a passport. Take a boat to islands around Singapore instead of sitting to clear the causeway jam.
So pack your sunscreen and insect repellent — adventure awaits just a stone’s throw away from the mainland.

St John’s Island offers a quick escape for those in need of a break from the city.
In place of gleaming skyscrapers, you can appreciate lush foliage and clear waters — a rare sight on the beaches of the mainland.
A quick note, there are many cats on the island but don’t worry, they are used to humans and are friendly.

If you’re thinking about having a picnic by the pristine beaches, remember to bring your own food as there are no stores on the island.
There are, however, kiosks for you to rent bicycles. You could also try fishing in the clear waters surrounding the island, where you’re almost guaranteed a catch to bring home.
Nature lovers keen to learn more about the island’s diverse flora and fauna can join a free 90-minute guided walking tour that covers a total distance of about 1.6km. It’s only available on the first Sunday of every month and is capped at 10 participants per tour so grab your ticket quickly!

The next stop after St John’s Island would be Kusu Island, a heritage-rich getaway that shows a different side of Singapore.
Even from a distance, you can see the intricate arches and pagoda-like structures adorning the pier — a glimpse of the beauty you’ll witness further inland.

Head to the multiple holy sites in the area such as Da Bo Gong Temple or Kusu Keramat to wish for wealth, health and harmony — there’s even a wishing well at the temple!
Do take note that these temples are not wheelchair friendly as you’ll need to climb up some stairs.
One thing you absolutely can’t miss on this island is the Tortoise Sanctuary.
Located right behind the temple, head there to view the different breeds of tortoises just lounging in the sun. While it’s great to watch them lazing around, you’re not allowed to touch them.

While this island is still undergoing upgrades, here are some things to look forward to when it reopens this year.
A place with rich biodiversity — watch out for the different species of birds, plants and sea creatures.
Running through the island is the Ocean Network Express Coastal Forest Trail. While on this 230-metre trail, keep an eye out for endangered coastal plant species such as putat laut and penaga laut which will be lining the walkway.
This walk culminates at a hilltop viewing deck for a bird’s-eye view of the area, and of the birds in the area. An existing lagoon will be developed into a tidal pool with educational and monitoring programmes for the community.

Last but certainly not least, Coney Island. By far the most accessible (and most visited) island in Singapore.
Located in Punggol, this island boasts tall trees like you’ve never seen before and picturesque scenery. With its natural beauty, it’s not uncommon for visitors to see pre-wedding photoshoots taking place.
Cycling through the island is an easier way to fully appreciate the entire island in a reasonable amount of time.

Do make stops every now and then to catch sight of some of the wildlife here, especially the birds in the area.
If cycling is not your thing, try out the Ecolife Guided Walk — a free tour by NParks that takes you through the rich biodiversity and unique history of the island.

Coney Island
Getting There: Coney Island is directly accessible via the Coney Island Bridge (west) or Serangoon East Dam (east). If you’re taking public transport, alight at Punggol MRT Station and board bus 84. For those driving there, park at the outdoor car park at Punggol Settlement and follow the signs to Coney Island.
Price: Entry is free
Opening Hours: Daily, 7am to 7pm

As you’ll be exposed to the sun quite a bit on these day trips, do remember to stay hydrated as best as you can. Don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen. You can also prevent yourself from suffering from the side effects of heat by bringing a cap, an umbrella or staying in shaded areas.
While it’s important to get some Vitamin D, it is equally important to stay safe and healthy while enjoying these day trips that offer a completely different view of Singapore.
