A newly opened community space operated by social service agency Presbyterian Community Social Services (PCS), dubbed A Good Place, will soon offer opportunities for intergenerational social mixing as part of their suite of programmes for seniors and youth with special needs.
The 12,000sqft facility is located on the first floor of One Holland Village, where it will operate on weekdays as a free-to-enter hangout spot and activity centre with affordably priced programmes.
It currently houses a cosy cafe area, a day activity centre tailored to individuals with special needs that will be run by social enterprise Connexions and various activity rooms.
A Good Place to mingle

Programmes curated for seniors include yoga and pilates classes, dance workshops and ukelele groups. PCS’ executive director, Dr Andrew Lim, says that there are plans to equip the hub with senior-friendly gym equipment, before progressively implementing activities that foster intergenerational mingling.
This includes activities for youth with special needs led by senior volunteers.
We hope that they can be advocates for [these youths] not just at the centre, but within their communities too,
he says.
The launch of A Good Place – Place being an acronym for Presbyterian Learning and Collaboration for Empowerment – marks a significant milestone for the social service agency as it celebrates 50 years of service.
[PCS] started small, with the old Heng Teck Centre at Bukit Merah, at a void deck. It started as a playgroup, and as a place for seniors to gather in the evenings and at weekends. And it grew. The volunteers grew, and now you're a full-scale social service agency running 16 preschool centres, plus a whole range of other services, for individuals with special needs and the elderly in particular.
Says President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and guest of honour at the launch,
The facility is PCS’ largest ever, costing around $2 million to construct. The agency also operates six active ageing centres, two maintenance day care centres and home care services for seniors.
As part of its 50th anniversary, the social service agency updated its name to Presbyterian Community Social Services from Presbyterian Community Services, in a bid to better reflect its growing range of services.
Homemaker Shabariah Binte Abu Bakar, who joined PCS’ Esther Active Ageing Centre (AAC) in 2023, welcomes the launch, though she figures she probably won’t be popping by too often. After all, most of the befriender’s pals are all at her home AAC in Queenstown.
During Hari Raya, I'll call all of them to my house and cook for them. I'll be very busy – if I’m free, and there’s something interesting, I’ll try my best lah,
she says with a laugh.
